Out on the trail with the Jimny

Meet the Founders

Two paths. One journey.

Linda and Ian met in commercial property, and have been pulling in the same direction ever since — towards the wild, towards hard places, and towards work that is done properly.

Linda

Director · Lynx Optics

I’m a director of my family-owned business, Lynx Optics, established in 1982. A respected name in rifle scopes, binoculars and spotting scopes, Lynx represents four decades’ legacy of precision and quality.

An accountant by profession, I’m equally creative, exceptionally industrious and happiest turning ideas into reality. I can swap corporate Excel grid sheets for off-grid wild camping without missing a beat.

After building a career in marketing, heading up major brand campaigns with Universal McCann, I moved into commercial property, where our paths first crossed, before answering the call of my family business.

Ian

Founder · Black Mamba Coils

My own journey has taken a rather different path. After 20 years in hospitality management — including running hotels in the UK, returning home to help manage a Conservation Corporation Africa lodge, and building and running two restaurants of my own — I eventually sold up and took an entirely new direction, moving into aviation at age 32.

As a captain with Coastal Aviation in Tanzania, I lived and worked among East Africa’s legendary wilderness reserves and lodges, flying over and into the Serengeti’s great migration and the spectacular Ngorongoro, Ruaha and Selous reserves.

I later commanded Dash 8 aircraft on CemAir contracts across West Africa, including some of the region’s more troubled areas, before spreading wings further afield on the Boeing 737-800 with FlyDubai.

Trail conditions the suspension is built for

Adventure has always shaped our lives. For me, that means years of international travel, endurance marathons, ultra-marathons, cycle touring around Europe, cycle touring across Australia, solo cycling from Johannesburg to Cape Town, dune bashing in the UAE and, more recently, exploring Africa's remote landscapes in our little black Jimny, Black Mamba.

Our own overlanding experiences exposed a fundamental problem: conventional suspension upgrades weren't adequately addressing the Jimny's changing loads and stability challenges. Rather than risk another off-the-shelf disappointment, we set out to find our own solution. That personal mission became Black Mamba Coils.

Today, working alongside South African Jimny specialists and TopTiger, we're developing practical suspension solutions tailored to the demands of African travel. Our focus goes beyond just a lift; we specialise in differential load management, consistent ride height and stability across changing terrain.

Our mission is simple: solve real problems, prioritise quality and performance, and deliver genuine value through local manufacturing wherever practical.

Every Vehicle Requires a Tailored Approach

We believe proper suspension starts with understanding the vehicle, not simply fitting a standard solution.

We assess each Jimny from a clean slate, taking into account its individual weight distribution, load requirements and intended use.

Our approach is driven by experience, a passion for getting things right, and a commitment to solving real-world problems through superior quality, performance and practical design.

Wherever possible, we manufacture locally, delivering genuine value without compromising on standards.
